To say that the president and the crowd were guardedly reserved is an understatement. For a minute I was thinking he was giving an interview to FOX News. Anyway, the big "sell" was on for the health care poison pill that just came out of the House. As Comrade Pelosi engaged in effusive back slapping for herself and her socialist colleagues, I began to think; "is this really happening"?. On the one hand we have the House, blithely passing a bill that unfairly punishes the most prosperous in our society (aka THE RICH}. On the other hand we have the hapless president, who has never run a business in his life, trying to convince experienced business people that they need health care. Get a clue.
The Chamber crowd knows about business. They realize that you don't get something for nothing. Obama, in his attorney mode, spoke to the fact that the attendees businesses "may" (beautiful weasel word really meaning WILL) be compelled to buy health insurance. This comes on top of the requirement that individuals will be compelled to buy health care insurance or be fined. Where in the constitution does this kind of power come from? Would someone please tell me.....and make it good. The health care debate is simply about transferring more freedom (power) to the government.
Obama and company seem convinced that health care is the right of every person living in the United States. It is a liberal belief. Irrational and unfounded to its very core. To that end there is no cost that will not be heaped upon the U.S. economy to make universal health care a reality. You simply cannot add 36 million to the ranks of the insured without causing trouble, or really soaking everyone with taxes one way or the other. There is "no free lunch". The audience at the chamber knew this and that's why I believe his sales job fell on deaf ears for the most part. The attendees also know that the hand in their pockets is not just for their workers, but the millions of non-working persons who will respond to the president's favor by going to the ballot box for another helping.
In the end, I guess Obama also missed the fact that most of the Chamber's attendees probably fall into his loosely defined "rich" classification. They know they are getting soaked by the snake-oil salesman running our country. Most left feeling their wallets a lot lighter.
