Been sitting on my bum for a while and that is a shame, because there is so much going on that requires comment. At the risk of being irrelevant, I wanted to start a new chapter in the saga of Bock-Talk and comment on the books that I have read. There is a huge volume of great material coming on line that, if discovered, will change the debate going on in this country as we wrestle with what real "change" means.
I want to dedicate this post to Gaphrenia. Once in a great while you come across people who are truly inspiring; who challenge you to think in new ways and who offer encouragement without commitment. If you can find such a person, treasure them and most important of all......listen. Thanks for the jump start Gaphrenia.
George Gilder's book "The Israel Test" is a fascinating look at the historical achievements of the Jewish people which cannot be denied. With meticulous support and logic, Gilder explains how the Israeli experience and position in the world SHOULD deliver a powerful message to those who value freedom and achievement. Like the alien code in the film "Independence Day", at our own peril, we ignore the message that Jewish success sends us. Israel, like America stands as a beacon for freedom and excellence in a world that, ever so inevitably, slips toward mediocrity by pillorying capitalism.
The world's myopia to the success of capitalism and the Jewish experience is borne of envy and jealousy. I have experienced this first hand. Some of my relatives, children of the Great Depression, were brought up to tacitly suspect Jews as having uncommon powers of achievement. For some reason this Jewish prowess was to be considered suspect and in many cases reviled. As Adolf Hitler so dramatically demonstrated, peoples' inability to reconcile Jewish success against their own shortcomings served as the foundation for pogroms rooted in bigotry. This is where Gilder challenges us all.
If one accepts Gilder's premise that the Jews have indeed achieved great things through the application of individual freedoms and defense of capitalism, then we are given a choice; "The Israel Test". We can either wallow in envy and jealousy or we can celebrate Jewish successes, for in doing so we prove ourselves to be unwavering supporters of world freedom and the precepts of capitalism. Failure to do so opens us to manipulation by those who would seek to gain power over us. Think about it for a short time. How many of us celebrate when an acquaintance tells us of his or her latest achievement? Do we jump up for joy, or do we harbor a feeling of "why didn't I do that"; or "well he or she got lucky"? I submit to you that it is the rarity that one celebrates the victories of others. That is a sad state and Gilder makes it clear using the Israel model, that until America and Americans can feel good about the beauty of individual success and the nurturing environment of capitalism which makes success possible we are doomed to bondage by despots and tyrants who know how to prey upon our envy of those who "have" attained success.
One needs only to look at the rhetoric flying out of the White House today to know what Gilder asserts is true. Whether you are an insurance company, a large bank or oil company, or making a goodly sum of money, you are to be castigated. Class warfare is a moniker of the Obama administration. Those who have succeeded are somehow to be mistrusted and hated in order to galvanize one segment of America against another. It's all about concentration of power and the theft of our freedom. If we can understand that individual achievement, success and wealth is a wonderful thing which brings bounty to all, and not a "zero sum" game, America (and Israel) will continue to be the beacons of hope for the world desperately in need of a champion. Without the realization that success is good there will be no will, and no one country, to fight to preserve our way of life and the freedoms we have all come to enjoy. I urge everyone to read Gilder's work "The Israel Test" and some of his other works; very scholarly and impeccably argued.

If At First You Don't Succeed - Sue, Sue Again!
Another example of "change you can believe in". The Feds are beating up on Arizona for trying to save itself from the pestilence of illegal immigration (for my liberal friends, if any, emphasis is added to the word illegal). The U.S. Justice Department is attacking the Arizona Law on the basis of the Feds preemptive right to enforce laws of national concern. Immigration being one of them. The Feds specifically laid off the racial profiling issue because it is a loser for them and there can be no racial profiling by definition until the law is in effect. Sadly our own government has refused to carry out its job and Arizona is (oh, excuse me, we are) paying the price. Well today the Justice Department announced it may file another lawsuit against Arizona on the basis of racial profiling. If you read between the lines, this means...."hey, we're going to cherry pick cases of enforcement after the law is in effect, find the best one, then come down on you." This smacks of predetermined outcome, just like the Eric Holder gaff when he virtually guaranteed that Khalid Sheik Mohamed would be found guilty in New York court.
Any reasonable person, not drunk with Obama Kool Aid, and possessing half a brain has to ask themselves, "what the hell is this administration doing"?. Why does Obama feel compelled to sue not once, but twice, a State of the Union for protecting itself? Two part answer; 1) unbridled and naked arrogance and 2) as cover for its failure to secure the border and its abject failure to enforce United States' own laws. This is incompetence of the highest order. Can you remember seeing anything like this? The current administration is acting much like Hugo Chavez' regime in Venezuela.....using the power of the treasury to promote ill advised and unpopular policies.
Well folks it doesn't end here. You may have heard that the administration's request for a six month moratorium on deep water drilling was struck down in court. Seems the moratorium was short on science and facts. It was amended and ASSERTED AGAIN. So rather than let the wisdom of the court stand and to keep thousands of Gulf workers on the job, the Feds announced they would issue another moratorium. Our own government is fighting against the will of the courts and the people. Our own government, paying homage to its' eco-masters, just flipped the bird to all those trying to stay employed producing this nation's life blood of oil. This whole situation is outrageous, but it is obvious that the administration will stop at nothing to force it's agenda forward; damn the people, damn the courts and damn the Constitution. We have an opportunity to stand up in November and remind those in Washington who would not listen, just who's the boss here.
Ok, we the electorate made an honest mistake in 2008 (by calling this an "honest mistake" I am giving you independents who misunderstood Obama's true agenda a chance for a "do over" and maintain a little pride). A true socialist radical cloaked in a vague mantle of change was elected in error and we missed that fact. We also failed to notice that we opened Pandora's Box by letting The Anointed One rise to the throne while liberals controlled his party and the legislature, effectively removing all checks and balances from power. Sounds bad, but we can fix it. If at first you voted wrong, vote, vote again!
